A Winter Wedding in France: Romance and Warmth at La Grange de Nicolas

Real Weddings

Planning your wedding in winter: you had never thought of it, had you? And yet winter is the season when love is sheltered and cherished. Outside, the weather hardly invites a party, so couples curl up together by the fire, dreaming of the spring that returns every year.

If the winter season is the perfect time for cosy evenings and taking care of each other, it could just as well be the perfect time for your wedding!

What could be more romantic than celebrating two people’s love in a château in Gironde, wrapped in happiness, surrounded by your loved ones and sheltered by warm stone walls?

If you have not yet been won over by the idea of a winter wedding, here are a few arguments that should appeal to you.

A Winter Wedding Styled Shoot

For a study project by students of the ISEFAC school in Bordeaux, I was invited to photograph a winter wedding inspiration shoot in January 2020.

We worked together with a floral designer on the styling. The aim: to give you inspiration through my photographs.

Thanks to these real-life styled photos, you can picture what your own winter wedding could look like!

A Winter Wedding at an Exceptional Venue near Bordeaux

We were welcomed by La Grange de Nicolas in Tresses, in Gironde, not far from Bordeaux.

This typically local building is full of Bordeaux charm. Its whitewashed stone walls and exposed beams recall the old farmhouses of the region.

The barn’s little extra: wooden cabins perched in the trees! A haven of happiness in the heart of nature for the newlyweds.

The venue was also perfect for my photographs and for creating a winter set, with all the props linked to the theme of the shoot. The floral designer’s arrangements went beautifully with the wood that was everywhere in the room where we worked.

Winter Wedding Décor and Outfits

While the models were getting ready, we set up all the décor for the shoot.

For the table, we chose elegant tableware: white plates and gold cutlery, candles in the centre of the tables for the warmth of winter, reminiscent of a crackling fire, mistletoe, pine cones and fir branches.

Our two newlyweds both matched the winter wedding theme. For him: a very elegant three-piece blue suit, a white shirt, a handsome watch and a sprig of flowers on his buttonhole echoing the bride’s bouquet.

For her: a long, flowing white gown with embroidery and a simple hairstyle, with one or two loose strands and a few flowers tucked into the bun for a bohemian touch. Natural make-up for a healthy glow, and a pearly lipstick for delicacy.

Winter Wedding Venues

The Splendours of a Winter Wedding

A winter wedding is a unique, magical celebration, where snowy landscapes and warm lights create an atmosphere that is both intimate and enchanting. The winter months are a chance to step away from traditional spring and summer weddings and choose a ceremony full of poetry and originality.

Choosing the venue is essential to make the most of this sometimes overlooked season. Enchanting places such as a historic château, a house full of character or a mountain chalet in the heart of nature become the ideal setting for a winter wedding. Indoors, crackling fireplaces, vaulted ceilings and elegant wood panelling bring glamour and warmth to the celebration. Outdoors, nature offers a breathtaking backdrop, where snowflakes and frosted trees form a romantic setting for your photographs.

Winter weddings are also a chance to explore original, sophisticated themes for the décor. Deep, elegant colours such as burgundy, midnight blue or emerald green blend beautifully with metallic touches and accents of white. Candles, fairy lights and lanterns add a warm, soft atmosphere, while floral arrangements of fir branches, red berries and winter flowers bring freshness and poetry to the ceremony.

The Wonder of a Winter Wedding Venue

Among the most sought-after places for a winter wedding are mountain chalets, set among snowy peaks. They offer an intimate, warm setting with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and forests, so couples can celebrate close to nature in a cosy, refined atmosphere.

Mountain chalets often have flexible reception spaces, suited both to small weddings and to grander celebrations. The ceremony can take place indoors by the fire, or outdoors under a starry sky in an enchanting winter setting. Their services are usually tailor-made, with options such as catering, decoration and accommodation on site for guests.

Besides mountain chalets, other exceptional places can host a winter wedding, such as a manor house. Châteaux and historic houses also offer a sumptuous, elegant setting, where majestic reception rooms glow by the light of chandeliers and candles. They often have outdoor spaces, such as formal French gardens or inner courtyards, which can be arranged for a winter drinks reception or an unforgettable photo session.

Finally, couples looking for something original and modern can choose more unusual places, such as industrial lofts, art galleries or botanical glasshouses. These spaces offer endless possibilities for decoration and layout, so you can create a made-to-measure celebration that truly reflects who you are.

To me, a winter wedding is a chance to break away from convention and create a unique, memorable celebration to say "I do". Mountain chalets, châteaux and unusual venues offer an idyllic setting to celebrate love among snowy landscapes and warm, magical atmospheres. Whatever the theme or venue you choose, a winter wedding is an unforgettable experience for couples and their guests, who will remember this extraordinary celebration for a long time. Give free rein to your imagination and creativity to plan a winter wedding that reflects the beauty and magic of the season.

Choosing a Room for a Winter Wedding

When it comes to choosing the perfect room for a winter wedding, several things matter for a successful celebration that is comfortable for your guests. The room must be large enough for your guests and the various activities, while offering a warm, cosy setting that brings people together. Make sure it is well insulated and has efficient heating, so the temperature stays pleasant all evening.

The decoration of the room also plays a key role in creating an enchanting winter atmosphere. Thick, soft fabrics such as velvet or faux fur can cover the chairs or serve as tablecloths, adding refinement and warmth. Fairy lights, candles and centrepieces of fir branches, pine cones and seasonal flowers will enhance the space and immerse your guests in a magical, romantic atmosphere.

With its authentic charm and intimate atmosphere, La Grange de Nicolas in Tresses is a perfect choice of room for a winter wedding. Its flexible, elegant spaces and personalised services allow couples to create a made-to-measure event worthy of their dreams. There is no doubt that La Grange de Nicolas can bring out the magic of winter and give couples and their guests an unforgettable memory.

Winter Wedding FAQ

Is winter a good season to celebrate your love?

Winter weddings are not only well suited to it: they can be unforgettable, depending on the unique, enchanting setting you choose. The season offers an intimate, warm atmosphere. A winter wedding stands out for its originality and poetry, a way to step away from spring and summer traditions and create a celebration full of magic and refinement.

Winter wedding ideas?

A winter wedding is the ideal occasion to explore creative, original ideas that reflect the beauty of the season. Imagine a ceremony under a starry sky or in a heated marquee, surrounded by snowy landscapes and twinkling lights. I suggest playing with textures and materials, bringing natural elements such as fir branches, pine cones and red berries into the flowers and the styling of the room. Do work with a florist who specialises in weddings, to get it just right. Finally, offer your guests winter activities, such as a hot chocolate tasting or a Christmas wreath workshop, to make your winter wedding an unforgettable, magical experience.

What are the advantages of a winter wedding?

The season brings its own advantages, for a celebration that is both unique and elegant. The wedding gown can use richer, more luxurious fabrics, such as lace, silk or velvet, for a refined, warm style. Your guests will be delighted to discover an enchanting world, far from traditional summer weddings. Your invitations can reflect the winter atmosphere, with delicate illustrations and soft colours.

Another important advantage to remember: suppliers are less in demand in this season, so they are more available and offer more attractive rates. You will have more choice. A venue such as La Grange de Nicolas becomes an intimate, warm cocoon, and the preparations take on a winter feel. The decoration combines deep tones with pastel touches, while the caterer offers comforting seasonal dishes. The reception room is dressed with candles and fairy lights for a soft, romantic atmosphere. I recommend having your humanist ceremony led by an experienced planner. The bridal bouquet can be made of seasonal flowers, combining pastel shades and winter textures. Finally, the carefully laid wedding table will welcome your guests for an unforgettable feast, crowning an exceptional day in the heart of winter.

What do winter wedding photos look like?

Winter wedding photography celebrates the fleeting beauty and poetry of the season. Choosing a Fine Art photographer means capturing these precious moments with an artistic, delicate approach. My winter wedding in Paris on the banks of the Seine shows this: the photographs bring out the contrast between the softness of a white sky, the serenity of stone landscapes and the intensity of the emotions shared by the couple. Each photograph becomes a timeless picture, where the winter light gracefully reveals the details of an unforgettable day.
